Affirmative Action

February 9, 2012

I believe I’ve only ever had one native student. He seemed like a nice guy, and he worked very hard in the class. He met with me for a total of at least two or three hours over the course of several days in preparation for a single paper, showing me outlines and drafts each time.

He was hopeless. I couldn’t get him to understand anything. None of the drafts showed the slightest comprehension. They never improved. He was easily the dimmest student I’ve ever interacted with.

It was embarrassing. He clearly shouldn’t have been in university. People had just kept passing him along so that I could watch him struggle and fail.
